Corbett Says He’ll Push For Privatization of State Liquor Stores if Elected

HARRISBURG, Pa. – October 20, 2010 — Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Corbett says he’ll push for the privatization of liquor and wine sales in Pennsylvania if he’s elected governor.

Corbett said Tuesday that he will submit a plan to get the state out of the liquor business as one source of the revenue that will be needed to balance the state budget. He did not offer any details.

  1. I am not sure how Corbett thinks this will increase State revenue.

    While I understand that our government is perhaps the only entity that can continually lose money while operating inefficiently and still stay in business, I find it hard to believe that State liquor stores currently do not or cannot make a profit.

    My question essentially is, how would taxing an item create more revenue than selling the item itself?

    It does not make much sense to me, but obviously I need to research the matter further.
