Residents in Austin receive unexpected deposits

AUSTIN – A reader by the name of Joe submitted the following email:

A bunch of people in Austin got free money if they had Northwest bank accounts. I don’t how many people but a bunch of people got $600 deposited.

An article at Solomon’s Words for the Wise indicates that residents did indeed receive unknown deposits in their Northwest banking accounts today. It is not clear how many people were affected, or if all Northwest customers received such an unknown deposit.

The article reports that Northwest will be looking into the matter on Monday.

Editors note of caution: If you were affected by this, it may be an error. Most financial institutions protect themselves from liability in such instances of an error. You may be liable for knowingly withdrawing or spending funds acquired in error.

  1. Most likely this is a website error that is displaying an incorrect account balance online. Such an error would not actually affect a user’s account balance, but would certainly cause confusion for anyone utilizing their online account management portal. Most banks tell their customers to only rely on this information as a reference anyway.

I am trying to determine if any of these residents have seen the same discrepancies at an ATM, as this would indicate that there is indeed an error within the banking institution’s database and not merely an otherwise harmless visual error on the website.

I’ll post more information when it becomes available.

  2. Years back I had a $300 error. I took out money from an ATM but it was deducted from anothers account. I took some doing but the bank did correct the error.

I coulda kept the money … but GOD was watching.
