Genesee River Ranked as 32nd Dirtiest River in the Country

The Genesee River is ranked as one of the most toxic rivers in the country by Environment New York.   Several New York waterways have been cited as toxic by the group, with the Genesee ranking as the 32nd dirtiest river in the country.  The Seneca and Hudson Rivers are also in the top 40 dirtiest rivers, according to the report, which states that industrial facilities dumped more than 5.7 million pounds of toxic chemicals into New York’s waterways in 2010.

The environmental group pushes for stricter enforcement of the the Clean Water Act,  including stricter permitting and enforcement, recommending that  EPA and state agencies should issue permits with tough, numeric limits for each type of toxic pollution discharged, ratchet down those limits over time, and enforce those limits with credible penalties, not just warning letters.
