Girl suffered a concussion, whiplash and broken blood vessel

COUDERSPORT – A Roulette man, convicted of assaulting a teenage girl and causing multiple injuries, has been sentenced to jail.

Robert J. Nortum, 56, of Roulette, was sentenced to serve 3 to 12 months in jail on one count of simple assault(M2).

Nortum was arrested in April of last year after he assaulted the girl while intoxicated, causing her to suffer a concussion, whiplash and a broken blood vessel in her eye.

An Affidavit of Probable Cause filed by Tpr. Travis Trimbur said the girl told police Nortum had been out drinking all night, and then assaulted her after she did not immediately come out of the bathroom when he wanted to use it.

The girl told police Nortum punched and slapped her in the face several times before pinning her to a bed. According to the affidavit, it took two other women to pull Nortum off the girl.

In addition to jail time, Nortum was ordered to have no contact with the victim. He was also ordered to perform 25 hours of community service, participate in AA and/or NA meetings, attend a Potter County Victim Impact Panel Presentation and pay $400 in fines.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Benjamin Ross. Nortum was represented by Public Defender Brent Petrosky. Judge Stephen Minor presided.
