Organizations and individuals who are concerned about the environmental risks of hydrofracturing for Marcellus Shale natural gas production are being invited to attend a program and discussion to be held Wednesday evening, Aug. 18, from 7-9 at the First Presbyterian Church (402 North Main Street) in Coudersport. Organizers will air a lecture by Cornell (N.Y.) University Professor Anthony Ingraffea, recorded earlier this year during a public meeting in Vestal, N.Y., and host a discussion of the issues. Dr. Ingraffea’s lecture is also available on many internet sites, including YouTube.

Two decades ago, he helped to develop the process of hydraulic fracturing when he was with Schlumberger. His research concentrates on computer simulation and physical testing of complex fracturing processes. Ingraffea’s team performed pioneering research in the use of interactive computer graphics in computational mechanics. He has a doctorate in rock-fracture mechanics.
