Public Welcome At Christmas House Open House Thursday

Potter County Today

christmrsclauskidsChristmas House in Coudersport is planning its popular holiday season open house for Thursday, Nov. 11, from 11:30 am to 8 pm. As always, there will be soup, cookies and other refreshments for all. Santa himself is planning a visit for 6-8 pm. The open house is an opportunity for people to look over the good works of the volunteer staff and — if they wish — to donate in support for Christmas House, located at the corner of Main and Water streets in Coudersport.

At one time, the mission of Christmas House was supported by state and county funds. More than a quarter-century ago, the organization became self-sustaining through donations and volunteer management and labor. It has been headed since its inception by Alyce Reese, who will be among those on hand to greet well-wishers at the open house.

Christmas House is far more than a holiday-based charity. All year long, the volunteers help fire victims, displaced workers, victims of domestic violence, the homeless, residents of long-term care facilities, and anyone else in need. Referrals come from churches, caseworkers and schools. Sadly, the needs that Christmas House attempts to fill have risen as a result of layoffs and economic stresses. The facility is facing serious financial challenges as the volunteers gear up for another holiday season. Nevertheless, by Dec. 24 they will have delivered thousands of Christmas presents to underprivileged children and adults across Potter County. Behind the scenes, numerous other volunteers have been building toys, cleaning and dressing dolls, knitting warm winter clothing and raising money.
