Flaming Forage Festival

Rachel Lippert represented Cameron County High School at the recent Pennsylvania Flaming Foliage Festival in Renovo. The festival, in its 62nd year, attracted another good turnout. All 31 queen contestants rode in the parade. Rachel, the daughter of Danielle and Dwayne Hopwood, was escorted by Joseph Holjencin. She’s an honor student and a member of the Math Honor Society and track and field team. Also appearing in the parade was the Cameron County High School marching band.

Two Sentenced in Potter County Court

Two people were recently sentenced in Potter County Court for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Thomas Butler, 19 of Coudersport, was cited after a one-vehicle crash in September 2009 on Dingman Run Road in Eulalia Township. Police said he refused to consent to a sobriety check. He was sentenced to three days to six months in jail, a $1000 fine and 25 hours of community service.

Howard Gardner, 27 of Woodhull, N.Y., was sentenced to 90 days to five years in jail for a second DUI conviction. He was also ordered to pay a $1,000 fine and perform 25 hours of community service.

Coudersport Borough Police observed Gardner committing several traffic violations in February and was found to have a blood alcohol level of .19 percent. The legal limit in Pennsylvania is .08 percent.

Troubling Increase in Cocaine Use Documented

Working with local schools, the county jail and other entities, the Potter County Drug and Alcohol Program has made significant strides in one of its top priorities: prevention.

At the same time, D&A officials are concerned about new trends in the abuse of alcohol and other drugs, as well as limitations in treatment options for those with addiction issues.

Those are among the conclusions of the D&A program’s 2009-10 annual report, recently compiled by Potter County D&A Administrator Colleen Wilber.

The report tracks substance abuse trends and reveals that alcohol abuse accounts for about 55 percent of referrals, followed by marijuana/hashish at 23 percent. One area of concern is the growing use of cocaine/crack, from just over 1 percent of referrals to more than 8 percent over the period of one year.

Copies of the report are available for review at Potter County Human Services in Roulette or the Potter County Commissioners office in the Gunzburger Building.
