Potter County’s new Veterans Medical Center opened its doors for what proved to be a busy debut on Thursday. “The response was outstanding,” said Leonard Kalkbrenner Jr. (shown), the county’s director of veterans affairs. “You could see just from the results of the first day that we’ve been able to bring more Potter County veterans into the system. This is a very positive development.” The clinic will be in operation every Thursday from 9 am to 3 pm. Bath (N.Y.) VA Medical Center is operating the primary care office and outreach center at the Mapleview property, 24 Buffalo Street, off Rt. 872 in Coudersport. The center will be staffed by VA personnel trained to process new enrollments, schedule appointments and update patient information. Starting July 22, veterans who have scheduled appointments can be seen at the new location. Toll-free contact number is 1-877-845-3247. The number at the local center is 814-260-9342.

Plans for the clinic have been in the works for several years. “We look forward to supplementing the health care services provided for Potter County veterans,” Bath VA Center Director David J. West said. “We are pleased to join county officials and community health care providers, such as Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, in ensuring that veterans receive the highest quality care.” Doug Morley, chairman of the Board of Commissioners, said, “This has been an ongoing effort for years and is the result of a great deal of cooperation and teamwork.”
