A training session to help medical professionals, emergency responders and educators deal with a disturbing phenomenon, “the choking game,” will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Charles Cole Memorial Hospital conference room. Games Adolescents Shouldn’t Play (GASP), a campaign set up by families of choking victims, focuses on a troubling activity causing death and suffering for thousands of families worldwide. It often begins with teens choking each other as a way to get “high” without the risk of getting caught with drugs or alcohol. It sometimes ends with kids dying or suffering permanent brain damage, since the phenomenon involves interrupting the flow of oxygen to the brain.

Wednesday’s program is presented in cooperation with the Robert Packer Memorial Hospital Regional Trauma Center. Presenter is Cheryl Macdonald-Sweet, trauma program manager at Pocono Medical Center. Supper will be provided. Those planning to attend should contact Potter County Department of Emergency Services at 274-8900 or Emily Myers at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, 274-9301, Ext. 1187.

GASP is focused on educating the public on how dangerous the choking game is and preventing it by working with schools, medical institutions and community organizations.
