A weekend of music, dining and reminiscing is planned for Friday and Saturday, Aug. 12-13, from 6 to 11 each night, at Olga’s Café in downtown Coudersport during the sixth annual Robert Merten Circle of Fifths Music Award Benefit.

The event has evolved into sort of a town-wide reunion as those who were affected by the late Rev. Merten gather to reminisce and pay tribute to a special man while dining, dancing and supporting the cause of music education.

Topping the bill is a reunion performance by some members of Ollie and the Go Gos, Potter County’s regionally famous rock ‘n roll band from the ‘60s. Although the Go Gos went their separate ways after high school, they were drawn back together in 2004 for a memorable reunion.

This summer, members will gather again to honor the memory of a man who was a friend, counselor and inspiration to each of the band members.

Larry Herbstritt, who was “Ollie” in the band, credits Rev. Merten with broadening his own musical horizons as a teenager. He went on to become a professional songwriter and remains a driving force behind the Merten Circle of Fifths Music Award.

It was established as a memorial to the clergyman, intellectual, and musician who died in January 2006 and is presented to college-bound students who plans to study music.

In addition to Ollie and the Go Gos, there will also be some special guests taking the stage during the evening, including some of the past Circle of Fifths Award winners.

Also on the bill Aug. 12-13 are local favorites Jakob’s Hollow, fresh off recent recording sessions for a new CD that will soon be released; the Bradford-based classic rock band, Marshmellow Overcoat, and local musicians.

Ollie and the Go Gos will play both nights. Marshmellow Overcoat is booked for Friday and Jakob’s Hollow for Saturday. A special show with Larry Herbstritt and vocalist Christin Dubots, performing some of his original music, will close out Friday night’s performance.

Admission is $10 per night. Dinner is available; advance purchase of tickets and reservations are strongly encouraged. To purchase advance tickets and/or to make dinner reservations call (814) 260-9966, e-mailjsnyder@eggdecorator.com, or stop at Olga’s Café.

All proceeds are used for the Circle of Fifths Music Award.

There’s another way contributors can support the Music Award, and that’s by purchasing a sponsorship for the Circle of Fifths Benefit. The sponsorship can be made in honor of, or in memory of, another individual and will be included in a keepsake booklet that will be distributed on both nights of this year’s benefit. Checks made payable to “Merten Music Award – PCFAC” can be dropped off or mailed to Olga’s Cafe, 4 East Second St., Coudersport PA 16915.
