Belmont Man Killed in Scio Crash with State Trooper

NY State Police investigating accident involving one of their own

SCIO, NY – Kenneth Johnson, 84, of Belmont, NY, died as the result of an automobile accident yesterday at about 4:30 pm at the intersection of State Route 19 and the Plum Bottom Road outside Scio.

According to authorities, Johnson was traveling South on Route 19 when he failed to yield to oncoming traffic and made a left hand turn onto the Plum Bottom Road, crossing into the path of a State Police vehicle operated by Trooper Rodney Perry. Johnson’s vehicle then struck another car, driven by Patricia Rogers of Scio, which was stopped at the stop sign on Plum Bottom Road.

Johnson’s 14-year-old great-grandson, who was a passenger in his car, was transported to Buffalo Women and Children’s Hospital by ambulance.

Johnson was transported to Jones Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

As a result of the accident, State Route 19 was closed until about 10:30 pm last night.
