Trout Unlimited Seeks Rotary Support for Veterans

1 min read

Dr. Pete Ryan, President of the local chapter of Trout Unlimited, together with David Saulter, Vice-President, presented information about the organization’s “Healing Waters Fly-Fishing” initiative to the Coudersport Rotary Club earlier this week.

The Healing Waters Fly-Fishing project was started three years ago and provides a fly-fishing “retreat” experience for disabled war veterans whereby they learn to tie flies and fly-fish in the various Potter County streams.

Ryan explained that, like Rotary, Trout Unlimited is guided by the principal of “Service Above Self”, explaining that the Healing Waters Fly-Fishing project is one way to show appreciation for the country’s veterans, by teaching those veterans diagnosed with post-traumatic stress syndrome as a result of their wartime service, coping skills and healthy hobbies.

The retreat is generally held in June and lasts two or three days at locations within Potter County such as Big Moore’s Run Fish and Game Preserve.  Anyone interested in volunteering for, or donating to, the 2011 Healing Waters Fly-Fishing Retreat should contact Dr. Ryan at (814) 274-7731 or Mr. Saulter at (814) 274-9763.
