Pitt-Bradford Student’s Essay to Appear in Orion Magazine

1 min read

BRADFORD, Pa. – An essay by University of Pittsburgh at Bradford freshman Jamariss Rhodes about growing up with her grandparents in Antigua will appear in the March/April issue of Orion magazine.

Rhodes, a pre-medicine student from Bronx, N.Y., wrote the essay as part of a freshman seminar course taught by Dr. Don Ulin, associate professor of English.

Ulin said he asked students to write short essays about the places they had lived and submit them to Orion, a bi-monthly environmental magazine that features nature writing and discussions of environmental and cultural concerns. Rhodes’ essay appears as part of a regular feature, “Place Where You Live.”

“Each Saturday after church, the entire family would come over for Sabbath lunch, and it always turned into dinner because we had so much fun and so many laughs together,” Rhodes wrote. “My grandparents fed twenty-one people three meals a day, and if someone passed by looking even a little bit hungry, they were invited to join the meal.”

Essays written by all of the students in Ulin’s class are published on the Orion website. “Only a very small number of submitted essays are selected for inclusion in the print edition,” Ulin explained.

Rhodes’ essay can be read at http://www.orionmagazine.org/index.php/place_where_you_live/view/liberta_6016/.
