Poet Kathleen Driskell to Read from Work at Pitt-Bradford
2 min readBRADFORD, Pa. – Award-winning Kentucky poet Kathleen Driskell will read from her work next week at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
Driskell’s reading, which is part of the university’s Spectrum series, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Mukaiyama University Room of the Frame-Westerberg Commons. The reading is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
Driskell teaches at Spalding University in Louisville, Ky., where she is the associate program director of the brief-residency Master of Fine Arts in writing program.
“I’ve heard Kathleen read many times and found her to be an engaging and funny poet who I think will inspire her audience to see poetry as something accessible, rich, resonant and entertaining,” said Dr. Nancy McCabe, associate professor of writing and director of the writing program at Pitt-Bradford.
Driskell’s most recent collection of poems is “Seed Across Snow.” Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Claudia Emerson said of the 2009 book, “Her poems about love in the context of a long marriage, something all too rarely experienced and even more rarely well expressed, are finely wrought and particularly beautiful.
“Mining the domestic to find in the most ordinary closet or attic figurative richness, Driskell writes with formal poise, precision and spirited wisdom.”
“Seed Across Snow” was also listed as a national bestseller by the Poetry Foundation in 2009.
She is the author of one previous book of poetry, “Laughing Sickness,” now in its second printing, and the editor of two anthologies of creative writing.
Her poems have appeared in many nationally known literary magazines.
She is the founder of the Kentucky Writers’ Coalition, an organization of writers that fosters, connects and supports writers through a newsletter, conferences, literary events and contests.
She lives with her husband and two children in an old country church built before the Civil War.
