Potter County Local Census Results To Be Released

Potter County’s official 2010 census results will be released in the coming week and they’re likely to reflect two disturbing trends: a loss in population since 2000 and a significant aging of the populace. The U.S. Census Bureau will release local-level 2010 population counts, along with demographic data, for seven more states this week.

Interim estimates have shown a population of just over 16,700 in Potter County at last report, down significantly from the official 2000 census figure 18,080. The county’s population rose in the first three years of the new century, but then began to fall. The official census report will reflect how job losses and an aging population have driven the local figure downward.

The U.S. Census Bureau recently honored the Potter County Board of Commissioners and the Potter County Planning Department as 2010 Census Partners, participating in activities or events that emphasized the importance of an accurate population count. These included public education work, providing space for census employee training, and sponsoring census seminars for the public.

For each uncounted citizen, the county stands to lose an estimated $10,000 in federal funds during the current decade. Census results are used to decide state and federal representation districts and to distribute more than 50 grant programs, including support for education, transportation, health and human services, housing, criminal justice, employment services, farming and environmental protection.
