Gas Industry’s Wastewater Recycling Rate Greatly Exaggerated

On the heels of conflicting information from a recent DEP study and a New York Times article, comes new information that previously declared wastewater recycling rates in Pennsylvania were wildly exaggerated, due to a massive calculation error on the part of Seneca Resources Corp., a subsidiary of Houston-based National Fuel Gas Co.

The company admitted on Thursday that a worker gave inaccurate data to the state, which resulted in 125,000 barrels of recycled wastewater being reported as 5.2 million barrels – resulting in a significant difference in actual recycling rates than the industry has been quoting.
