George Hults and Paul Herzig, of the Coudersport Rotary Club, presented approximately 140 dictionaries to Sherry Cowburn, Principal of the Coudersport Elementary School, earlier this month, as part of the Rotary Club’s Dictionary Project. The dictionaries will be distributed to the school’s 3rd and 4th grade students.

According to Principal Cowburn, “Many people believe that dictionaries are no longer necessary or useful tools to our students because of all of the options available on the internet. However, computers are only one of many resources that can be used as a learning and research tool. With limited computers in each classroom, there are still many times throughout the day during which our students may utilize book-form dictionaries to complete their work.” “On behalf of the school we appreciate donations such as these in order to continue providing varied learning tools to enhance educational opportunities for our students,” added Cowburn.

The Rotary Club’s “Dictionary Project” is a program aimed to assist students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. The goal is to provide a dictionary to every student in the Coudersport School District by providing the dictionaries to every 3rd grader on an annual basis.

Anyone interested in becoming more active in the Coudersport Rotary Club Dictionary Project or other humanitarian programs should call Karen Cahilly, Club President, at (814) 203-3933.
