No Injuries after Ambulance hits Deer

Ambulance disabled while responding to emergency

HARRISON TWP. – Police say 64-year-old Gary O. Erway, of Ulysses, escaped injury after hitting a deer while en route to an emergency call along Route 49 on November 15.

Police say the crash happened as Erway was driving an ambulance east in the eastbound lane of Route 49. A deer entered the southbound side of the roadway, at which point the deer was struck by the front-end of the ambulance. The deer then slid across the roadway and was struck by another passing motorist.

Police say the second unidentified driver’s vehicle suffered functional damage and left the scene.

Police say Erway was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was uninjured. The ambulance suffered disabling damage.

No traffic citations were issued in the crash.

State Police say they were assisted at the scene by Ulysses Volunteer Fire Police.
