Special Weather Statement

1 min read

Snow showers and a few heavier squalls will impact the northern half of central Pennsylvania including the Interstate 80 corridor through tonight.

Much colder air moving over the warmer waters of lakes Erie and Huron will produce scattered to numerous lake effect snow showers and squalls today and tonight.

Away from the lake effect snowbelt areas… accumulations will be light. However… despite only minor accumulations… snow squalls can produce a dangerous and rapid drop in visibilities with near white out conditions in lowing snow. Rapid changes in driving conditions can often accompany visibility hazards… where the snow falls onto untreated and relatively warmer Road surfaces… causing it to partially melt and then re-freeze. As a result… Interstate travel can become particularly dangerous during snow squalls. Highway travelers are urged to frequently check local weather conditions today and tonight… and if possible… exit to safety before driving into or through a squall.

With the threat of snow squalls… be prepared to encounter rapidly changing weather and Road conditions today and tonight. Reduce speed… use emergency flashers and allow extra distance between vehicles when encountering heavy snow showers and snow squalls.
