County ‘Problem Gambling’ Study Results Reported

Potter County Drug and Alcohol Program recently conducted a study of problem gambling. A team was assembled to evaluate survey results, local trends and anecdotal data. The result was a report on the extent of the problem, community perceptions, and resources (both available and needed) to address the issues. Input was solicited from youths, parents, educators, human service workers, law enforcement, civic volunteers, elected officials, business owners and clergy.
Colleen K. Wilber, Drug and Alcohol Program administrator, reports that the survey results showed that the agency should continue to dedicate its limited resources to addressing issues related to the abuse of alcohol and other drugs. Problem gambling is an issue in Potter County, Wilber noted, but does not rise to the level of requiring local intervention.
Problem gambling is defined as gambling behavior which causes disruptions in any major area of life: psychological, physical, social or vocational. It’s a progressive addiction characterized by increasing preoccupation with gambling, a need to bet more money more frequently, restlessness or irritability when attempting to stop, “chasing” losses, and continuation of gambling in spite of mounting negative consequences. Gamblers Anonymous operates a 24-hour telephone service for those who are concerned about problem gambling at 1-888-424-3577.
