Update on Gasline Fire

The two fires that have been blazing for several days near Millport, after an apparent lightning strike on Wednesday, have died out. From the information we have received it appears the fires died out due to a lack of fuel. Gas company officials reportedly got stuck while attempting to respond to the fire.

Luckily, these fires never developed into a forest fire, as they easily could have.

Note: This is not a gas well. This is a 6″ public gas delivery line that has reportedly been in disrepair in the past.
As you can see from the photo below, this particular tree has glowing embers on it. It was probably only a matter of time before it caught fire and spread. Fortunately, some area residents happened to spot the fire in the forest, which was not visible from the road.

You can see the 6″ pipe in the second photo.

In the first photo you can see that a second fire sprung up behind the first fire.

As one reader pointed out, there were two fires, but both were along the same section of pipe, and quite close in proximity to one another.

Also, while the fires were believed to have been the result of a lightning strike on Wednesday, that is only speculative and they were not discovered until Thursday by local residents.

Crews are reportedly working now to replace the damaged section of piping.
