Area Code 814 to Run Out of Numbers
1 min readThe Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission will vote this morning on whether or not to split the current 814 area code.
The 814 area code, which was established in 1947, covers 27 counties in parts of Pennsylvania from the Northwestern PA/Ohio border to the Southcentral Pennsylvania/Maryland border. It is only one of four original PA area codes that still maintain it’s original borders.
It is expected to run out of numbers sometime in 2013.
The Commission is expected to split the area code, leaving 814 for a portion of the current area and then implementing a new three-digit area code for the remaining areas. However, an area code overlay is also possible, which would mean that the current 814 area could have two area codes.
