A sheen of oil was clearly visible on the Allegheny River at Hickory Street Bridge in downtown Warren for more than an hour Wednesday afternoon.

Details about the problem, including the source, and the amount and type of material, were unavailable at press time.

Warren City firefighters responded to a call at about 2 p.m. According to firefighters, the caller reported a visible sheen on the river and a strong smell of oil. Both of those were in evidence at the bridge until at least 3 p.m. At Hickory Street, the patchy sheen was moving steadily downstream and extended across about one quarter of the width of the river.
