Elderly Couple’s Animal Hoard
2 min readAn elderly couple in Limestone Township, Pennsylvania, was found to be living with 75 neglected cats and dogs in their small home. The situation came to light in September when neighbors reported a strong odor and constant barking. Investigators from the SPCA and state dog warden’s office visited the home on November 6 and found the animals living in squalid conditions.
The couple, Andrew and Linda Schuler, aged 73 and 71, respectively, claimed they were trying to care for the animals on their own but had fallen behind. However, the conditions in the home were described as ‘overwhelming,’ with urine-soaked floors and walls, feces-covered surfaces, and animals that were matted and fearful. Many of the animals had fleas, ear mites, and other health issues.
A search warrant was executed, and officers spent six hours removing the animals from the home. In total, 29 dogs and 46 cats were seized and taken into SPCA care. The animals are currently undergoing treatment, grooming, and evaluation. The Schulers face 150 counts of animal neglect each, and Andrew also faces charges for running an unlicensed kennel.
The case highlights the importance of reporting suspected animal neglect and the need for responsible pet ownership. It also raises questions about the challenges faced by elderly individuals who may struggle to care for large numbers of animals. The Schulers’ preliminary hearings are set for January 21.
The SPCA and local authorities are working to ensure the animals receive the care they need and to prevent similar situations in the future. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of community involvement in preventing animal neglect and promoting animal welfare.
