DEP to fine Jefferson County fire department in illegal burning

PUNXSUTAWNEY (AP) — The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection says a western Pennsylvania volunteer fire department may be good at putting out fires, but not so good at starting them.

The DEP says it plans to cite the Big Run Volunteer Fire Company near Punxsutawney for burning materials from a commercial building the department had torn down over the weekend.

The building was donated to the fire department, which decided to raze it instead of maintaining it. The DEP says it’s illegal to dispose of building materials by burning them.
