Holiday Road Safety Concerns

The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) has released its traffic enforcement and crash statistics for the 2025 Christmas holiday period, revealing a concerning trend of accidents and arrests on the state’s roads. Between December 24 and 28, the PSP investigated a total of 1,007 vehicle crashes, with six of these incidents resulting in fatalities. Furthermore, impaired driving was identified as a contributing factor in 53 of these crashes.

During the five-day holiday weekend, PSP troopers made 207 arrests for driving under the influence (DUI), highlighting the ongoing issue of drunk driving on Pennsylvania’s roads. In addition to these arrests, the PSP issued a significant number of citations, including 1,502 for speeding, 155 for failing to wear a seat belt, and 10 for not securing children in safety seats.

A comparison of the 2025 holiday period with the previous year’s data reveals some notable trends. The total number of crashes and fatalities has increased, with 1,007 crashes and six fatalities in 2025, compared to 598 crashes and one fatality in 2024. The number of DUI arrests has also risen, from 128 in 2024 to 207 in 2025. These statistics serve as a reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving practices, particularly during peak holiday periods.

The PSP’s enforcement efforts are a crucial aspect of maintaining road safety, and the release of these statistics serves as a warning to drivers to exercise caution and follow the law. By highlighting the risks associated with impaired driving and other hazardous behaviors, the PSP aims to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on Pennsylvania’s roads.
