'Jennifer's Law' to Require Citizens to Report Violent Crimes
1 min readA newly proposed law dubbed ‘Jennifer’s Law’ would make it illegal to witness a violent crime and not report it.
The law is named in memory of Jennifer Daugherty, a 30 year old mentally handicapped woman that was severely tortured for days before being murdered.
Senator Kim Ward of Westmoreland County introduced the proposed legislation. She said, “I would think of Jennifer’s Law almost as a human law, you know a humanity law. If you see someone being harmed in a violent way, call for help. That’s all it says”.
Eleven other US states have similar laws. PA also has similar laws, but they are not aimed directly towards citizens reporting crimes, but rather as Good Samaritan laws, they bind medical personnel to render care when necessary.
