JERSEY SHORE – A man installing a sewer lateral was killed Tuesday morning when a pile of dirt, believed to be at least 5 feet high, suddenly collapsed into the trench he was working in at Elm Street, according to investigators.
A police officer, who arrived on the scene at 332 Elm St. within a minute after the 8:30 a.m. trench collapse, tried to save the man, but there was little he could do.
Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling Jr. identified the victim as Stephen P. Beattie, 52, a former long-time South Williamsport employee who in recent weeks had been hired by Krape Excavating, of Pine Creek Township.
