The body of a Knoxville, Pa., driver who had been missing for a day and a half was found Friday at the scene of a one-car accident in Crooked Creek in Chatham Township, Tioga County, Pa.
State police in Mansfield said it is unclear if Matthew Phillip Wood, 24, lost control of a 2000 Audi Sedan or if he fell asleep around 11 p.m. Wednesday while driving north on state Route 249 south of Davis Hill Road.
Police said Wood was driving on a right-hand curve when he crossed both lanes of traffic, hit a guide rail and went airborne for about 50 feet, hit a few small trees, landed on the ground, then went airborne again for about 200 feet down a steep hill. The car landed in the creek at the bottom of the hill.
Police said Wood, who was not wearing his seat belt, was ejected on impact.
Wood’s friends and family were looking for him and the car, but the car wasn’t visible from the road, which made the search difficult, police said.
