PORT ALLEGANY- Naoma F. McDowell, 82, of Route 6, passed away Thursday (Apr. 12, 2012) in the Altoona Regional Health System.
Born July 16, 1929, in Franklinville, NY, she was a daughter of Norbert F. and Omega Frost Bergholtz. On April 17, 1949, in Port Allegany, she married Theodore “De” McDowell, who died June 30, 1997.
Naoma was a longtime resident of the area and a graduate of Port Allegany High School, Class of “46”.
Mrs. McDowell had worked for Sena Kean Manor as a nurse’s aide and later with Ball-Foster Container Co., before her retirement.
She was a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Port Allegany, where she was a former Sunday school teacher, member of the church council, church altar guild, and was a past “Mother of the Year”.
She was a member and past Worthy Matron of the former Myrtle Chapter of Eastern Star, Port Allegany. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels for several years.
Surviving are three sons, Theodore D. (Wendy) McDowell, Jr. of State College, PA, Terry L. (Julie) McDowell of Savage, MN, and Scott B. McDowell of Port Allegany; five grandsons, a granddaughter; and four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Norbert (Betty) Bergholtz of Blue Bell, PA, Gary (Mary Ann) Bergholtz of Florida; a sister, Joyce (Thomas-deceased) Husband of Hatboro, PA; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Devon (Jeannie) Bergholtz.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (Apr. 18, 2012) in the Gethsemane Lutheran Church, with Rev. Larry Scofield, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Port Allegany.
Memorials can be made to the Gethsemane Lutheran Church or S.W. Smith Library Building Fund.
