Nushawn William's Attorney in Court Today
1 min readCHATTAUQUA COUNTY – A lawyer for the man convicted of intentionally infecting dozens of people in NY with HIV was in court today, arguing on behalf of his client, Nushawn Williams.
When Nushawn was originally sentenced, many believed he would not live to complete his prison sentence. Today however HIV patients are living longer lives and Nushawn’s sentence was completed in April. However, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo wants to keep him in custody, leveraging a civil law that permits confinement of those determined to be mentally ill.
Last month a Judge ruled that there is enough evidence to keep Williams in custody until a civil confinement hearing can be held in October.
State Supreme Court Judge John Michalski did not rule on the case today, but rather ordered both sides to appear back in court next month.
