OLEAN – The Olean City School District Board officially approved the layoffs of 11 teachers Tuesday.
The nine-member board voted 8-0 to accept the position cuts during its bi-monthly meeting; vice president John Bartimole was not present. The abolished positions ranged from elementary teachers to librarians to a foreign-language instructor.
The moves were long-expected: School officials were shorthanded due to Gov. David Paterson’s proposed state budget, which includes a $1.1 million cut in aid to the district. School administrators adopted a public-approved budget with a 2.44 percent property-tax raise – and numerous teacher layoffs and program reductions – under pressure from the board to keep any tax increase less than 3 percent.
