PA Legislation Bans Shackling Inmates During Child Birth
1 min readHARRISBURG – The PA House of Representatives has passed legislation that will ban shackling female prisoners while in child birth.
“By passing this Bill today, the House sent a clear message that Pennsylvania will lead the way in stopping this archaic form of torture,” said Andy Hoover, legislative director of the ACLU in Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania will join 7 other states that have similiar legislation.
The move comes on the heels of the American Medical Association passing a resolution that urges policymakers to end such practices. The American Public Health Association and the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists have similiar resolutions.
“These health professionals understand that shackling during labor is unsafe and inhumane,” said Hoover.
Shackled during child birth? No one deserves that! I really don’t care what they did.
