PORTVILLE – For several months, Mayor Tim Emley has heard talk about the village merging with the town of Portville to save money.
He has also heard talk about the village not being able to sustain itself financially in the near future. While he said he is not sure where this sentiment is coming from, he is determined to reassure village residents that while he is mayor, he will not be in favor of dissolution.
Inefficiencies and redundancies in local government services. High property taxes. Local government consolidation. These words, echoed in the halls of state government in Albany, would seem to prompt discussion on village dissolution, according to Wade Beltramo of the New York State Conference of Mayors.
But Mayor Emley doesn’t believe dissolution is the answer for the village of Portville.
“I am completely against dissolving the village,” he said. “The idea of Albany, which can’t even manage its own money, telling (villages and towns) what to do? We are running as smooth as well-oiled machines.”
