Registration Open For Strengthening Families Program

Families in Potter County can learn skills and attitudes that improve family life and communication through Penn State Cooperative Extension’s PROSPER program, short for “Promoting School, Community and University Partnerships to Enhance Resilience.” It is designed to help parents of fifth- and sixth-graders more effectively encourage positive behavior and goal-setting with their children while discouraging risk-taking, including alcohol and drug use.
Topics range from dealing with stress and peer pressure to strengthening family relations. Programs are held each Thursday evening from 5:30 to 8, from Jan. 27 through March 10, at the Coudersport Elementary School. Dinner will be provided and child care is available.
The program uses role playing, discussions and learning games to improve parenting skills, build life skills in youth and strengthen family bonds. It has been shown to reduce the use of drugs, improve emotional management skills and increase a willingness to follow rules. Parents gain a better understanding of youth development, a greater willingness to get help and a broader comprehension of risk and protective factors for youth.
Registration is now open. More information is available from Carrie Bowman at Penn State Cooperative Extension, 814-274-8540 or cbb136@psu.edu.
