In an effort to crack down on crime rings, a new state law will make some retail thefts a felony offense.
The law goes into effect in August and targets ring leaders behind crime sprees that are carefully planned and executed.
State police said stores will also have to do their part to curb thefts by adding more security cameras and guards, as well as taking another look at security policies like what kind of purses or backpacks shoppers can carry in stores.
“We’ve had groups that have shopping lists of what they go in the store and get,” said Richland Township Police Sgt. Michael Burgan.
