Penn State Cooperative Extension is encouraging owners of water wells located in the vicinity of gas drilling in Potter, Cameron, McKean, Tioga and Elk counties to enroll in a free monitoring program. Purpose is to check for possible effects from the drilling on water supplies. Extension Educator Jim Clark is spearheading the project. He can be reached by email at jac20@psu.edu. “We’d like to have a representative sample of water wells located within 2,000 feet of a Marcellus Shale well to be drilled and hydrofractured any time this year,” Clark said.

Meanwhile, Penn State Cooperative Extension is producing a quarterly water quality newsletter, Water Currents. Those who would like to see the newsletter can access it on the internet or to sign up to receive it by email. To access the agency’s highly regarded water management/issues website, click here.
