PA Tax Credit Deadline Looms
Pennsylvania residents are being urged to claim a new state tax credit before the April 15 deadline. The Working Pennsylvanians Tax Credit aims to provide financial relief to nearly 1 million people in the state, with eligible residents able to deduct up to $805 from their state taxes.
According to Governor Josh Shapiro, approximately 490,000 out of 940,000 eligible Pennsylvanians have claimed the credit so far. The tax credit was included in the 2025-26 budget signed by Shapiro in November, as part of an effort to offset the financial burdens caused by federal policies, including tariffs and the war in Iran.
The credit is modeled after the federal earned income tax credit and is available to any Pennsylvanian who qualifies for the federal credit. To determine eligibility and calculate the deduction, residents can use an online calculator provided by the state Department of Revenue.
State lawmakers and officials, including Shapiro and State House Speaker Joanna McClinton, have emphasized the importance of the tax credit in helping low- and moderate-income families cope with rising costs. McClinton noted that the credit brings some financial comfort to families struggling to make ends meet, while Shapiro highlighted the need to mitigate the pain caused by federal decisions.
Residents who have claimed the credit have reported significant benefits, including being able to afford essential expenses such as speech therapy for their children or paying off bills.
