VIDEO: Fire at Hornell High School

HORNELL, NY – Crowds of onlookers watched as the Hornell High School roof burned Wednesday afternoon, plumes of black smoke billowing from the building.

Firefighters from Hornell, North Hornell, South Hornell and Canisteo battled the blaze.

Fire officials said a combination of winds and roofing materials created a situation in which the blaze spread rapidly.

The fire was sparked from a saw used by workers on the roof.

It was just the roof that burned. It suffered damage from both the fire and firefighters digging up hot spots, and classrooms on the second floor suffered water damage. Rooms on the first floor suffered slight water damage. So the damage on the inside, while not insignificant, is still minimal. has the full story.
